Charlton dumped out of cup on penalties

Charlton’s largely woeful cup form continued at The Valley on Tuesday evening when they lost 4-3 on penalties to London neighbours, Leyton Orient.

Chris Powell – who was sent to the stands in the second half – fielded a largely second string starting line-up. Only Hamer, Cort, Hollands and possibly Cook and Kerkar will have realistic chances of starting at St Andrews on Saturday.

The Addicks took the lead just before the half hour mark when Scott Wagstaff was freed by Jordan Cook into acres of space on the right. He drove into the area and his shot seemed to take a deflection off Gary Sawyer on the way as it beat Ryan Allsop in the Orient goal.

The East Londoners squared things up on the stroke of half-time. Matthieu Baudry rose unopposed to nod in a free header from a right-wing corner.

Orient should have taken the lead five minutes after the interval but David Mooney spurned a golden opportunity from the penalty spot. Lawrie Wilson was penalised for a trip on Mooney, only for the striker to blast the spot-kick against the bar.

Danny Green hit the post with a speculative free-kick from the far right and the Addicks lost their manager, for throwing a water bottle to the ground. Powell was banished to the stands by referee Gavin Ward.

Both sides had chances to win the game but it finished 1-1 at the end of normal time. Charlton made all three of their substitutions in extra time when Pritchard, Jackson and Wright-Phillips came on for Kerkar, Cook and Smith.
The latter two were probably introduced with the possibility of a penalty shoot out in mind.

The shoot out was at the North Stand end with Charlton going first. Jackson’s effort was saved, Wilson rattled the bar and Green, Wright-Phillips and Pritchard all converted.

Symes and Sawyer scored for Orient, Ben Chorley’s effort was saved by Hamer but Lloyd James and Ryan Brunt converted to seal a 4-3 shoot out win for the visitors.
